Sam joined the practice in 2024, bringing a uniquely wide-ranging background to the work. She holds an urban and art history B.A. from Columbia University and a Master's in City Planning from M.I.T.

After 12 years at World Monuments Fund in New York City — a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the world's cultural heritage — Sam moved to Philadelphia and completed a three-year horticulture and design program at the Barnes Institute.

Sam is relocating full-time to the Portland, Maine area in summer 2026, and is excited to grow the practice there.

Pim and Sam grew up with a love for gardens and the value of living in harmony with nature.

Pim's English parents created gardens wherever they lived — maintaining them, expanding them, playing in them, and talking about them. "Shall we walk around the garden?" or "Have you seen the garden today?" were common questions in the household. Desmond tended the roses and grass tennis court; Marjorie built perennial gardens, grew fruit and vegetables, and worked in the greenhouse all winter. The garden was a living entity through the seasons.

The Earls have spent summers with the family in Midcoast Maine for the last 35 years. Over the last five years they have spent more and more time there, and less time everywhere else. Together they believe that a garden can have many forms and functions, and should be designed to fulfil its owners' needs and wishes while respecting the spirit of place.

"Leave room for life in a space."
